Sundara Kandam. A commentary Chapters 48-54

Chapter 48
Aanjaneyar gets to meet Raavanan in his palace.
Raavanan hearing about the death of Akshakumar and all his soldiers, highly struck by grief, told Indrajith, his son, “Indrajith, the monkey looks to have extraordinary powers and strength. Hence with normal arrows and spears he cannot be subdued and overcome. I think the manthra based Asthraas only can be effective. To apply them, no one is there equal to you. Applying that type sasthra, tie him and bring him to me”.
Indrajith took his chariot driven by four lions, and also all the sasthra implements and a huge army and approached Aanjaneyar with full anger. Aanjaneyar got up, grew in size, using his body made a huge noise. He deftly avoided all the arrows coming to him and he flew here and there and gave return attack strongly. Indrajith decided to use Brahmmaasthram and chanted the suitable manthram. He aimed it towards Aanjaneyar who saw it and remembered his boon from Lord Brahma that he is not to be bound by it except oly once. He thought let me use it this time. By that, These people will take to Raavanan whom I could see and converse with. Acting outwardly that he is submitted to it, he was tied with all sorts of tying materials like thick ropes, leaves and barks and all the raakshasaas were proudly tied him. Butthey did not know that once they apply some other tying and bonding materials over and above the asthraa ,the original Brahmmaastthra becomes ineffective. This aspect, only Aanjaneyar and indrajith knew. Indrajith get worried that Aanjaneyar is acting as though he is under this condition and any time, he can spring up ,comeout and cause further destruction. So to block it, he ordered Aanjaneyar to be taken to Raavanan’s place immediately.
Aanjaneyar is brought to the central hall where he saw around and saw all the ministers and Raavanan sitting. On being enquired, Aanjaneyar says” I am here as a messenger. I am sent by my King Sugreevan"
Lesson – 48 :

Chapter 49 and 50
Aanjaneyar starts dialogue with Raavanan
Raavanan’s durbar hall was fabulous and portrays the Aiswarya Lakshmi residing there in totality. The walls , simhaasanam, all the chairs of the ministers, the crowns and the ornaments they were wearing show the varieties of gold, diamonds and high cost precious stones and workmanships are suited to the magnificient look of Raavanan with his ten heads and ornaments whe was wearing. He was majestic in look. Aanjaneyar thought if Raavanan follows strictly dhaarmic principles, even Indhra, Yama, , Kubhera or anyother Dava cannot be equal to him. Because of his bad deeds and mindless behavior, He is at the level of being condemned by all.
Prahastan, the minister of Raavanan was asked by the king to enquire the monkey and immediately Aanjaneyar starts” O king, I am a monkey only, not Indra or Nandhi or any other . I have a boon from Lord Brahma and as per that ,I will not be bindable with this Asthra. I was pretending to be bound so that I could see you I person. I am sent here as a messenger for the All strong and valourous Raama . I am keen to tell you words of good advice and guidance to you. I destroyed the Ashoka vanam so that you ask your people to come to me and take me to your presence. Just to protect myself, I counterattacked them and had to kill them . Please listen to my words”
Lesson : 49 and 50 : Appreciate the good qualities of the enemy and also his surroundings all the while concentrating on the aim and purpose of your action while talking or advising to him is what our Aanjaneyar practised and is giving it as lesson to be followed by us in suitable way.

I am a minister with King Sugreevan, lord of Kishkindhaa. Rama’s wife Sita was lost in the forest.Surgreevan sent all his valourous vaanaraas in all directions in search of Sita. I came here with the blessings of Rama, crossing the vast ocean and reaching Lanka. I searched here and there and found her kept in custody by you. \
Your fame and name are backed up by lot penance and boons, with full knowledge of Saasthras and Vedas and ruling a country full of prosperity and a happiness to people. All these should not vaish due to one act of yours which is away from the Dharmam, namely taking to you the wife of another person. This act of yours will bring bad name and negative effects not only for you but also to all your people who are blames in this.
Even the fire of chastity of Sita Amma is more than sufficient to burn the country. Same way, as I have shown my capability of killing so many people sent by you , I am capable of destroying the entire Lanka but Rama has not given permission to do that and hence we refrain doing that.
Rama is very compassionate and forgives people if they approach him realizing his mistake. Sameway, to help Lanka and the people, to be safe and sound, please hand over Sita to Rama and I am sure he will forgive you. I am fully confident.

 Chapter 52 and 53
On Vibheeshanaa’s advice Raavanan changes the punishment for Aanjaneyar
On hearing Raavanan’s order to kill the monkey Vibheeshanan , the younger brother of Raavanan interfered and told “ O, king, It is not as per rules that a messenger can be killed since he has just come here to convey a message. In that way, this monkey is here conveying the message of Rama. If he is allowed to go back, Rama will come here to fight with us and at that time, we will show our might and defeat him. Now for this monkey we can mutilate his important part the tail and if it is burnt and if he goes to Rama with out the tail, it I the disgrace indicatively shown to Rama by us.” Immediately Raavanan accepted and ordered for putting fire onto the tail of the monkey and take him along all the streets of Lanka for the amusement and enjoyment of the people at large.
The Raakshasaas immediately took lot of easily inflammable materials such as dry lothes, and wooden powders and wound them aroung the tail and poured the oil .Now they put on the fire to the tail and were shouting loudly. Aanjaneyar mentally thanked all the people for the same since he could go through all the parts of Lanka in this light since he could not see them earlier as it was atnight he came in. Evenif Raavanan subsequently puts Sita Amma in some other place also, I could easily spot out the place when I come with Rama here. “
Raakshasees inform Sita about the punishment give to Aanjaneyar, Sit Amma grieved and started praying Agni Bhagavaan , “O,Lord of Fire, if my chastity is true in full , then do not burn Aanjaneyar but give instead cool feelings to him and fire not have any effect on him.” Aanjaneyar was feeling “ how is it that hen all the coming near me are not able to bear the heat, fire is not having any effect on me and I feel very cool in this environment o my body. This must certainly be the blessings of Sita Amma and Raama. “ Now with more enthusiasm, Aanjaneyar burnt and killed the Raakshasaa holding him in bondage and jumping to various buildings and burning them in the process. The fire in the tail failed to burn him.

Aanjaneyar puts Lanka on fire with the fire on his tail
Aanjaneyar felt that th fire on his tail is the representation of all the miseries, agonies and difficulties Sita Amma experienced all these days and hence it is destructive and unquenchable. With the fire, he started putting it on all the mansions and palaces of the Ravanan ruled Lanka. Jumping from house to house, Aanjaneya was able to identify the occupant of each house and in series and He was careful to avoid the mansion of Vibheshanan, who advised Raavanan properly to righteous path and also of Thrijataa, daughter of Vibheeshanan, who with detailing her dream to the Raakshasees asked them not to harm or give trouble to Sita Amma any more.
culminating effect of all the sufferings, and mental torture experienced by Sita Amma. He then thanked and prayed toRama and thought Rama’s blessinga must have been instrumental for this happening and he is only activated.
